It was also a pharmacopoeia (pharmaceutical encyclopedia) and contains details on at least 1,400 plants, foods, and drugs, 300 of which were his own original discoveries. Ibn al-Baytar al-Malaqi Diya al-Din Abu Muhammad 'Abdllah bin Ahmad or commonly called Ibn al-Baytar (1197-1248) was a pharmacist, botanist, physician and scientist. In Egypt, Ibn al-Baytar, a Arab botanist from Spain, observed hashish being eaten by the Sufis. He noted that the Sufis had a special way of preparing their hashish, by first baking the leaves and then forming a paste by rubbing them in between their hands.

Ibn al-Baytar was born CE 1197 in the Andalusian city of Malaga under the Almohad Caliphate. The name ibn al-Baytar itself indicates that his father was a veterinarian. Al-Baytar got his training in botany from an early age under the tutelage of a renowned Malagan botanist Abu al-Abbas al-Nabati. He was a famed physician, herbalist, pharmacist, and botanist.
